The Order meets some ogres and there's a slight argument about spot checks.

Panel 1

Roy and Haley are riding stage right.
Haley: I think I'm gonna name my horse "Whisper".
Roy: I think I should name my horse "Silver".
Ogre #1 (off-panel): I think you should name your horse "Midday Snack."

Panel 2

Two ogres appear behind them.
Roy: We have GOT to start looking behind us more often.

Panel 3

Roy: OK, fine, you got us, let's roll initiative.
Haley: Hey, wait a minute.

Panel 4

Haley: Shouldn't the horses get Spot checks?
Ogre #1: Excuse me?
Roy: Yeah! They have eyes, they might have seen you before you spoke.

Panel 5

Ogre #1: Hey, it's not my fault you forgot to make checks for your mounts.
Ogre #2: Yeah, seriously.

Panel 6

Haley: Listen, the horses have a Wisdom score, so they have a Spot, so therefore they get to make their own Spot check, whether or not we remember.
Ogre #1: Grrr. OK, fine, fine.

Panel 7

Haley: So you two leave and come back, and we'll see if the horses Spot you.
Ogre 2: Let's just try to hurry this up.
The two ogres walk off stage left.

Panel 8

Roy and Haley sit on their stationary horses.

Panel 9

The ogres begin walking up behind them.

Panel 10

The ogres arrive behind them. Whisper bends down to eat some grass, "munch".

Panel 11

Haley: Darn it, Whisper.
Ogre #1: Can we get this Surprise Round started?
Ogre #2: Oprah's on at 4.
Whisper continues to graze, "munch munch".

D&D Context[]

This strip portrays the somewhat frequent event in D&D, particularly with inexperienced DMs, where a rule was forgotten or misinterpreted and events that have already transpired have to be retroactively changed.
The Wisdom stat helps determine how good a character is at their Spot Skill Checks.
Initiative is rolled at the beginning of combat to determine turn order.
A Surprise Round is one in which some characters have got the drop on another group of characters. They get a free round of action.

Trivia[]

This is the first appearance of the Weasel-Eating Ogres.
The Oprah Winfrey Show ran for 25 seasons from 1986 to 2011.
