Panel 1

Haley: Belkar, do you have a torch or not?
Belkar: Look, the day I don't have tools to set something on fire is the day you should check me into the Old Halfling's Home, but they're in the same bag.
Haley: Ugh, yeah. I have like ten things that would help if I could get into my own Bags of Holding for a second.
Elan: Hello? Uh… Sunny? Hi, my name is Elan. I think you charmed me earlier?

Panel 2

Sunny: Hi, Elan!
Serini: Don't start a conversation with them!
Sunny: But you already started one!
Serini: Taunting doesn't count!

Panel 3

Elan: So, Sunny, your name reminds me of where we were before we headed up to the North Pole.
Elan: Have you ever been to the desert?

Panel 4

Elan: It's so dry there. So much dust and sand.
Elan: Just dry, parched little bits of grit, blowing in the hot wind. The dry, hot, dusty, sandy wind.
Haley: Oh, I get it…

Panel 5

Serini: What is he babbling about?
Sunny: Uhhh…

Panel 6

Elan: You'll be travelling, and then all of a sudden you'll get a huge cloud of dust and grime in your face.
Elan: Right in your raw, unprotected face.

Panel 7

Serini: No, no, wait! Don't do it! Stay strong!
Sunny: Mommmm…

Panel 8

Elan: So much sand. In your eye. In your itchy, crusty, swollen eye.
Elan: You can feel the sharp little grains scratching your eye, can't you? Rubbing up against your eyelid.
Elan: Sand.
Elan: In your eye.

Panel 9

Sunny blinks, eye watering. The anti-magic effect is momentarily nullified.

Panel 10

Haley pulls a fire arrow out of her Bag of Holding.
Haley: Got it!

Panel 11

Serini: Sunny!
Sunny: I'm sorry! He was painting an evocative word picture, and you know how robust my imagination is!

Panel 12

Haley fires her fire arrow upwards—"TWANG!"

Panel 13

The arrow flies upwards.

Panel 14

The arrow leaves the antimagic field—"FWOOSH!"

Panel 15

The arrow hits the roof of the cave and sets it alight—"THUNK!"

Panel 16

Haley: Great job, Elan. We might not have magic down here, but at least we can see!
Elan: Hooray!
Belkar: Yeah, great, but I didn't figure it out fast enough to grab Bloodfeast, so I'm going to need you to do a quick monologue about cutting onions.
Belkar: Chop chop, let's go.

D&D Context[]

  • Haley appears to be using an arrow dipped in Oil of Flame Arrow, as the arrow's fire is clearly a magical effect, occurring as soon as it leaves the beholder's magic suppression field.
  • Sunny's reference to a "robust imagination" refers to stated facts about beholders in the 2016 sourcebook Volo's Guide to Monsters, which established that beholders are so magically potent and alien in mindset that their imaginations can actually warp reality, such that many beholders are created not by sexual or asexual reproduction, but by being dreamed into existence by other beholders.
