Ivan is a Dwarf, the husband of Hilgya Firehelm, in a marriage arranged by her parents. He was from another clan who she had never met before.

Unhappy in her marriage (when he asked if she wanted a foot massage she responded that he was "crushing her spirit"), she tried to poison him, but unsuccessful in her attempts (due to the natural Dwarven resistance against poisons), she ran away from the Dwarven Lands.

Trivia

• Ivan has the second longest absence between appearances of all characters, with 1,031 strips and almost 14 years between Pillow Talk and Better Served Cold Anyway. It was the longest at the time of publishing, but was later eclipsed by the return of Sunny, the beholder.
• Both of Ivan's appearances only showed him in a flashback. Since Hilgya has since been divorced from him, it's unlikely he will ever appear again.
