Kudzu is the infant son of Durkon Thundershield and Hilgya Firehelm. Based on the assumed timeline of the story, he is about three months old. However, he is able to talk to some extent[1], which might suggest he is older than that.
Kudzu was travelling with his mother, who joined with the Order in order to fight "Durkon". She refused to allow him to be cared for by the clerics at the temple of Thor, preferring instead to carry him into battle in a front-facing baby carrier. Hilgya believed that she was best able to protect Kudzu with her powerful clerical abilities.
During the battle with Greg and his vampire spawn in the Church of Odin's banquet hall, Hilgya was dominated by one of the vampires and Kudzu was taken from her to be used as a dwarven shield on Greg's lap.[2]
The name Kudzu is from the name of a type of flowering vine. His grandmother Sigdi surmises that Hilgya named him because he's a survivor; like the kudzu weed, he is hard to kill.[3]
