- Panel 1
Elan: ♪♪Move, move, move, move silently across the battlefield!♪
Haley: Geez, Elan, that one is the specific example given of a bard song that DOESN'T work.
Elan: Oh, right. I forgot.
- Panel 2
- Panel 3
Haley: Uh oh, a guard ogre. And he's carrying equipment, which probably means he has class levels.
- Panel 4
Elan: Don't worry, Haley! Vaarsuvius has been teaching me how to use my illusions better. I can get us past this guy.
Haley: Oh, you're just so cute when you are unjustifiably confident.
- Panel 5
Elan: Check it out!
Elan: Disguise Self!
- Panel 6
Elan: Look at me! I'm an ogre! Wheeeee!
Haley: Huh. This might actually work.
- Panel 7
Elan: Gotta get the voice just right...
Elan: chief need you. go. i guard cave now.
Ogre: ok. i do as you say, strange ogre i have never seen before. i go.
- Panel 8
Haley: Wow, Elan, I'm impressed.
Elan: Thanks! Maybe when this is over, you can tell Roy how I did a good job.
- Panel 9
Haley: Sure thing. I know how important his approval is to—
Elan: Ahhh! Look out!
- Panel 10
Elan is looking at his reflection.
Elan: There's another ogre in the water!
- Panel 11
Elan: I'll hold him off! You go free the captives!
- Panel 12
Elan jumps in the water and the illusion ends, "splish! splash!"
Haley: On second thought, maybe Roy doesn't need to know about any of this.
Elan: Watch out! I think he turned invisible!
D&D Context Edit
- In the Player's Handbook, the Inspire Competence class feature is described as not working with every skill and specifically gives Move Silently as an example.
- Disguise Self is a 1st-level Bard spell that changes your appearance, but not the sound of your voice.
- At his current level (8-9th according to the author), Elan should have access to at least 3rd level bard spells, though using such powerful magic is somewhat out of keeping with Elan's character. Thus far he has only shown the use of 1st level spells.
