The Order has found a bandit camp and has to find out if Elan is in it.
- Panel 1
Haley (off-panel): Wow, Belkar, good job tracking down that bandit camp!
Belkar (off-panel): Bandit camp? You told me we were looking for the nearest strip club.
Haley (off-panel): It worked, didn't it?
Belkar (off-panel): Touché.
- Panel 2
Haley: We need to be certain they're holding Elan before we mount a rescue operation.
Belkar: Too bad neither of our casters learned the spell "Detect Moron".
- Panel 3
Haley: Hey, V, why don't you send your familiar to scout the camp for him?
Vaarsuvius: My what now?
Haley: Your familiar. The raven?
Belkar: You had him in comic #3.
- Panel 4
Blackwing pops into existence, "pop!"
Vaarsuvius: Ah, right, of course. My trusted familiar is right here by my side, as he has been this entire time.
- Panel 5
Haley: Well, I'd like to send—hmmm. What is your raven's name, anyway?
Vaarsuvius: Name? Well, um...
- Panel 6
Haley: Don't tell me you never named him!
Vaarsuvius: I am a very busy elf! I plan on getting around to it one of these decades!
- Panel 7
Haley: Then I'm naming him now. How about... Blackwing?
Vaarsuvius: As you wish. I don't see why you bothered, I haven't named any of my other class features.
- Panel 8
Haley: OK, Blackwing, I want you to fly over the bandit camp and tell me if you see Elan.
Blackwing: Caw! Caw!
- Panel 9
Blackwing flies up.
- Panel 10
Blackwing flies over the bandit camp.
- Panel 11
Fifteen arrows shoot up at Blackwing, "fft! fft! fft! fft! fft! fft! fft!"
- Panel 12
Haley: Oh, COME ON! How many birds fly overhead every day, and they all decide to shoot THAT one??
Vaarsuvius: Is it too late to change his name to "Piñata"?ftee
D&D Context Edit
- This comic strip marks Blackwing's (now named, literally), Vaarsuvius' familiar's, second isolated appearance, carried only into the next comic. As Belkar notes in the third panel, Blackwing previously appeared in #3.
- V not remembering that Blackwing is there and his name becomes a running gag. Later this gag is inverted when Haley, who named Blackwing, can't remember who he is either.
- Belkar's underused tracking ability often requires creative prompting by the leader of the party, as in #22 and #838.
- The title of this comic is a play on the phrase "kill two birds with one stone."
