Cquote1 Fear me, meatbags, for I am SOUL-MUNCHER![1] Cquote2

Soul-Muncher is Tarquin's intelligent magical battle axe.

Appearance

The weapon is made of a black metal, with red runes carved into the blade, though the runes are absent in its early appearances. Its name suggests that it is capable of feeding on the souls of its victims, and this together with the red runes suggests it is possibly an homage to Stormbringer and Mournblade, the soul-consuming swords of Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné stories. An Elric look-alike made a cameo appearance in On the Origin of PCs[2] and also in a bonus strip in the Blood Runs in the Family book[3], where he was identified as Emmerick of Melbourne.

History

Tarquin is first shown using the weapon during his early days of conquest in the Western Continent when Nale was a small child.[4] It's name is only given in bonus material included in the print edition of Blood Runs in the Family; it was never named in the web comic. It has not outwardly displayed any personality, despite Tarquin's claim of it being an intelligent weapon.

Tarquin brought it out of storage[5] when he joined the Linear Guild. He used it skillfully in the battle against the Order of the Stick.[6] However, he was forced to throw it to stop Belkar from killing Nale in Girard's Pyramid, and ended up leaving it behind when Zz'dtri teleported him out. In a bonus comic it shows that the Order found it. Elan trys to pick it up but recoils from the pain, Haley says that it's "one of those Unholy weapons that hurts any Good person who touches it". Haley asks Belkar to hold it, but it quickly takes possession of Belkar, yelling at its newfound freedom. Roy takes it away from him, and asks Haley to open up a pit trap, and Roy drops it in there. The battle axe sobs[7]. It may have been destroyed when Girard's Gate exploded and destroyed the pyramid, though its final fate is unknown.

Abilities

The weapon is unholy, being evil-aligned and hurts any Good person who touches it. It also takes control of Belkar, claiming that Tarquin is too strong-willed to manipulate[7]. Its able to stun Durkon with its flat side and is able to be easily throwable.
