Sunny is a young orange-colored Beholder. They[1] make their first one-panel appearance as part of a fourth-wall breaching gag in strip 32 during the Order's early crawl through the Dungeon of Dorukan: the then-unnamed Beholder's scripted encounter with the Order is scrapped after "Squid Thingy" the Illithid gets dragged away by lawyers representing The Wizards of the Coast; unlike most monsters appearing in Dungeons & Dragons, neither Mindflayers nor Beholders can be freely used under the Open Game License.

Sunny re-enters the comic in strip 1189 at Kraagor's Gate as the (presumably) adopted child/minion of Serini Toormuck, assisting her in capturing O-Chul and Lien, though only their speech bubbles are seen at the time. They re-appear on-screen in comic 1238, using their main eye's anti-magic power to incapacitate the Order's magic-users as Serini springs her trap on the group. The invisible Serini also rides on top of them.

Serini and the Order eventually declare a truce, and while the "adults" strategize about their upcoming confrontation with Xykon, Sunny and Elan play a very informal game of baseball.

A scene in Serini's headquarters in comic 1225 includes a large orange beanbag with childish drawings pinned to the wall above it, indicating that this is where Sunny sleeps.

Abilities[]

  • Anti-magic: Sunny's main eye creates a cone of anti-magic. They use it during the fight, and also to create a hole in the wall of the Backstage.
  • Sleep: Used on Minrah during the fight.
  • Slow: Used on Vaarsuvius during the fight.
  • Fear: Used on Belkar during the fight.
  • Charm Person: Used on Elan twice, once to lure him into the trap and once during the fight.
  • Charm Monster: Used on Mr. Scruffy during the fight.
  • Petrification: Used on Durkon during the fight.
  • Telekinesis: Used on Elan's lute as a lure, and on Haley's bow during the fight.
  • Disintegrate: Used to create a hole in the cave wall.

A normal beholder would have ten eyestalks, but Sunny has only eight, and seems to be missing the eyes for Inflict Moderate Wounds and Finger of Death.

Personality[]

Contrary to the avaricious and paranoid beholders of most campaign settings, Sunny is child-like, cheerful, trusting, and open. They care greatly for their adoptive mother, although they do seem to understand some of her shortcomings.

They do not want to harm their enemies, refusing to use Disintegration beam against living things[2], as well as refusing to use Flesh to Stone against targets that are high above the floor due to the possibility of shattering[3].

Elan has great rapport with them due to their similar personalities.

Trivia[]

  • Beholders are not released under the Open Game License, and therefore the author cannot legally state the name.
    • Durkon and Vaarsuvius are unable to remember the species' name, despite knowing one's magical abilities[4].
    • Julia Greenhilt, apparently, likewise misremembers the name as "Observer" and "Discerner"[5].
  1. Comic #1295, The Thaw. Unlike Vaarsuvius, whose deliberate gender ambiguity includes a hilarious dance of pronouns in the comic, most characters usually didn't even use pronouns to refer to Sunny before Blackwing refers to Sunny as "they". This wiki will thus use the pronouns "they/them" for Sunny, as those are what the author uses.
