- Panel 1
Minrah: Good luck.
Durkon: Thanks.
Durkon: Commune!
- Panel 2
Cut to the clouds above Valhalla.
Planetar: Music hits me so hard / Makes me say, "Oh my Lord!"🎶
Thor: Oh!
Thor: Wait up, Dad, I gotta take this.
- Panel 3
Thor: Durkon, my dude! Did you get him to sign on?
Durkon: Uh, na 'xactly, Lord Thor. Me 'n' Minrah went ta talk ta 'im, an' I really tried ta listen ta wha 'e was sayin'.
- Panel 4
Durkon: An' I laid out me best offer I had, an'...well...'e tried ta implode me.
Thor: Oooo, man, that spell's rough. But you're not giving me this report in person, so...did you need to kill him?
- Panel 5
Durkon: Na, I dinnae think tha would help our case much. We held our ground as long as we could, but Xykon show'd up so we ran n' hid.
Durkon: Roy thinks tha best plan's ta kill Xykon first, then beat Redcloak until 'e agrees.
- Panel 6
Thor: Maybe he's right. If you feel like you need to engage in some good old-fashioned Warhammer Diplomacy, I won't second-guess you.
Odin: When all you have is a nail, every solution starts to look like a hammer!
- Panel 7
Durkon: I guess. I just wish it were a real solution to tha problem.
Durkon: I get tha it's import'nt ta get 'im ta go along ev'n fer a moment, but ye cannae truly change someone's mind by hittin' 'em.
Thor: Yeah, that's true.
- Panel 8
Thor: We tried a world once where you could do that, by the way.
Thor: Started out great, but turns out it's a huge advantage for the bad guys over the long run.
Odin: Now everyone just gets concussions!
D&D Context[]
- The Commune spell is a 5th level cleric spell which allows the caster to ask questions of their deity. The answers come in only yes or no or "unclear" response, or possibly a short phrase up to 5 words. Durkon at his current level in this strip could ask at least thirteen questions. Clearly, this conversation is not following those rules with regard to short responses. Whether that amounts to a house rule on the spell or it is simply Thor using his powers to go above and beyond the capabilities of the spell is open to interpretation.
Trivia[]
- Thor promised Durkon in #1148, "The Rainbow Rejection", that he would set a special ringtone for receiving a Commune request from him. The ringtone is revealed here to be the 1990 hit song "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer. Presumably Thor enjoys MC Hammer because of their shared love of hammers.
- This is the latest appearance of the Planetar Receptionist, who first appeared in #40.
