Transcript[]

Panel 1

Elan attacks, Roy blocks.
Elan (dominated): —and every night, Durkon tucks us in with tiny teddy bears.
Roy: Minrah, we could really use some Dispel Magic of our own right now.
Minrah: I'm trying but every time I try to heal, he stabs me!

Panel 2

Mr Scruffy desperately tries to stop Belkar.
Minrah: Stop! I don't want to hurt your friend, I just want to heal them!
Blackwing: Wait, I have an idea!

Panel 3

Blackwing: I have these enormous novelty sunglasses that I conveniently mentioned a few pages ago.
Blackwing: If I put them on Belkar's face, it should block the domination gaze!

Panel 4

Minrah: Where were you keeping—
Minrah: You know what? Never mind. Just do it!

Panel 5

Blackwing swoops over Belkar's head and, "DROP!", the sunglasses fall on Belkar's face.

Panel 6

Blackwing: ...Belkar?

Panel 7

Belkar stabs Blackwing, "SHTHURK!"
Blackwing: OW!!

Panel 8

Blackwing: Ow! Ow! It turns out it doesn't work that way at all!
Blackwing falls, while Minrah dashes past Belkar.

Panel 9

Minrah: Cure Moderate—

Panel 10

Belkar hurls his Dagger of Collision at Minrah, spoiling the spell, "fizzle!"
Minrah: Nnnnh!

Panel 11

Mr. Scruffy stares sadly at a weakened Blackwing.
Blackwing: Ugh, curse my feathers! I should've known that wouldn't work.
Blackwing: When will I learn that everything I touch...
Blackwing: ...only gets more...

Panel 12

Blackwing: ...funktastic...
Blackwing passes out.

D&D Context[]

  • Cure Moderate Wounds is a 2nd level cleric spell healing 2d8 + 1 point per caster level. Minrah can cast at least two spells at that level per day. Her dialog suggests she has already cast another one, but she is likely referring to the Cure Serious Wounds she attempted to cast in her last appearance.
  • The Shades could have been used to block the Domination before it was cast. Because Belkar is already dominated, the Shades have no effect.

Trivia[]

  • In panel 2, Minrah uses the singular "they" when referring to Vaarsuvius, not assuming their gender. This is in contrast to several other characters who have referred to V with either masculine or feminine pronouns, depending on the character's perception of their gender.
  • Blackwing in panel 3 refers back to #1119, in which he did in fact produce the shades for a gag.
  • The title, Throwing Shade, is a pun on the slang term which means to subtly insult someone. In this case Blackwing was literally throwing a pair of sunglasses, or shades.
